Prepare your stump for a prosthesis
The healing of the stump after amputation is the basis for subsequent prosthesis fitting and that is why it is particularly important.
At the hospital, your primary care physician will continuously monitor and review the healing process, while the resident nursing staff will be responsible for the daily treatment of your stump.
In addition to wound treatment, this includes edema and compression therapy, skin desensitization and sectional care.
The pain of residual limb
Various types of pain may occur in the stump of an amputated limb.
These may include bone pain, wound pain, nerve pain, or affected limb pain.
Each type of pain is treated according to its cause.
A variety of treatment options are available, such as medication, heating/cooling or wrapping the stump, and specific treatment options need to be discussed with your doctor.
Wound healing
When you wake up from anesthesia, your leg is usually covered with a dressing that already consists of a simple bandage or plaster with a small tube.
The tube is inserted into the wound during surgery to drain fluid and blood from the wound.
It's called a drain, and it's removed during the healing process.
The initial wound healing phase is usually completed within the first 14 days of wound closure.
After that, the connective tissue cells become stronger and transform into specific connective tissue.
However, even though the section appears to have healed well from the outside, and only the color of the section tissue has changed slightly since then, the whole section still takes longer to heal.
It can take up to a year and a half to fully heal under the skin.
The duration of the healing process depends on the individual's constitution.
Edema therapy
After surgery, the tissue around the stump is usually swollen.
This swelling, called edema, is a normal reaction to surgery.
It usually subsides after about a week.
The initial goal is to minimize the swelling of the stump, and then keep the volume, the circumference of the stump, stable.
Your doctor should prescribe lymphatic drainage for edema.
It is done by a physical therapist or an occupational therapist.
The aim is to stimulate drainage and remove fluid that has accumulated in the stump after amputation.
After lymphatic drainage, the stump is treated with special techniques - compression bandages, compression socks, or compression pads.
Compression also minimizes residual volume.
Desensitize the skin
The skin of the stump is very sensitive after surgery.
You can work closely with your treatment team or with your therapist to help desensitize your skin.
For example, gently rolling a rough towel or washing gloves over sensitive skin can help.
You can also gently massage the stump upward with a brush.
Using massage balls with small patches also helps to make the skin less sensitive.
Be sure to do all of this only in close coordination with your treatment team.
They will also show you the correct techniques.
Cross section of nursing
The surgical wound on the stump usually closes and forms a cross section within three to four weeks.
Even if it heals well from the outside, the underlying cross-sectional tissue may not be fully healed.
That could take up to 18 months.
Talk with your doctor or caregiver about sectional care that is right for you.
Rapid wetting of the cross section after surgery is recommended.
Your therapist will train you to apply optimal cleansing and massage to your skin, because the softer and more elastic your skin is, the more ready your stump will be for the prosthesis.
USA Yoband prosthetic innovation technology is shared, focusing on financial and material resources, focusing on and producing its own research and development, giving full play to its unique core competitive advantages, and fully integrating global resources with international peers for the benefit of disabled friends! So when selecting a prosthetic company, the amputee who installs prosthetic limbs must investigate on the spot to determine whether the prosthetic company really has a technical team to make a prosthetic receptor cavity. The qualified prosthetic receptor cavity plays a key role in their own comfortable experience and prosthetic walking gait.
